New U.S. DOT Research-to-Practice Road-Safety Actions Recommended by TRB and the National Academies
The United States faces a road-safety crisis. The number of fatal crashes per mile traveled has been climbing for the past decade. The fastest growing type of crash is those involving vulnerable road users—pedestrians, bicyclists, and others who share the roads with motor vehicles. A reversal of these trends will not only require high-quality, evidence-based safety research but also processes for ensuring that the results are implemented in the field.
Tackling the Road Safety Crisis: Saving Lives Through Research and Action (TRB Special Report 354), released today by TRB and the National Academies, provides a response to a request for expert analysis from the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The authors make a series of recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation, including calling for the need to prioritize and align national road safety research across federal agencies and state departments of transportation.
